Four high school teams participated in the Mayor’s Cup Debating Competition, with Canobolas Rural Technology High School students taking out the title.
In round one, James Sheahan Catholic High School students beat Kinross Wolaroi School students and debated whether merged councils are better.
Orange High School students were defeated by Canobolas students with the topic ‘councils should introduce financial incentives for recycling waste’ in the second round.
In the final round, James Sheahan students battled it out with Canobolas students and debated whether councils should fix local roads before spending ratepayers’ money on sports, arts and culture.
James Sheahan speaker Bridget Miller said it was the first time she had debated with her teammates.
“These guys aren’t my usual team but it was good because everyone has different skills,” Bridget said.
