Nomination paints picture of dedication

THE painters, decorators and sign trades teaching team at Orange TAFE were nominated for their excellence in the annual Institute Director’s Awards on Wednesday.

The team joins three other teams and eight individuals from the Western Institute of TAFE Orange campus who were nominated for their innovation, commitment and determination to get the results.

Painters, Decorators and Sign Trades head teacher Tony Wilson said it was wonderful for his team to be nominated for the award.

Mr Wilson said the course curriculum was continually evolving to ensure students were better equipped to enter the workforce when they graduated.

“We do a lot more communication with the employer and do site visits in regards to what they do on the job,” he said.

“The employer gets to have input into the training and they provide reports and feedback on the students.”

Mr Wilson said one of their success stories was ex-student Kyle French, who competed in the 2009 World Skills International competition.

Following wins at regional and national levels, Mr French went on to come fifth in the world for painting and decorating at the event in Canada.

Manufacturing section head teacher Neil Milton said the team was truly dedicated to its students.

“They’re prepared to go the extra mile and give extra training if needed,” he said.

“Their skills, their ability and their dedication - it’s really important for people to be rewarded for the effort they put in.”

Western Institute of TAFE acting manager of professional services Lorne Butt said the annual awards recognised the best in TAFE staff across the region.

“It’s recognising people who have really gone out of their way to provide services to our key stakeholders and clients,” she said.

Ms Butt said the nominations were taken from 24 campuses within the Western Institute of TAFE.

Winners will be announced on Monday October 22.
