A young and hugely inexperienced two blues outfit was on the wrong end of an 88-0 mauling at the hands of defending premiers Orange CYMS.
Hawks have battled to retain players since qualifying for the 2013 premier league grand final, with no one from that two blues team running out for the club on Saturday, just three seasons later.
In 2013, Hawks lost 22-14 to CYMS in the grand final – seven players from that champion green and golds side played in Saturday’s derby victory.
Gangaram was filthy, too, and it might have something to do with the fact three former Hawks coaches – Tim Mortimer, Brock McGarity and James Wynne - now call their crosstown rivals home.
Despite success while coaching, Mortimer (2013-14) and McGarity (2015) weren’t reappointed to coach by the Hawks club while Wynne stepped back at the end of 2012 due to work commitments.
“We’ve had a lot of players leave, go across to CYMS as well. Some have left altogether, some left NSW … it’s a bit of a shame,” Gangaram said.
“Loyalty is dead in this game. There’s nothing left. Players don’t play for the jersey. They see dollars signs and that’s it.”
Gangaram said the club was already in talks with some senior players to help the likes of Brodie Christopherson, Jedd Kennedy, Max Wolfson and Nathan Potts for season 2017.
But he reiterated the club wasn’t giving up on 2016 altogether.
“We’ve got to finish out this season,” he added.
“Next year we’ve got a few we’re making a play at. A few from Canberra possibly coming up here, two props from New Zealand. We’re just in talks at the moment.”
The club has also advertised for new coaches in all grades, something Gangaram has encouraged after Hawks lost Wise Kativerata late in the pre-season which forced Gangaram to put his hand up.
“I’m extremely loyal to this club … if the club needs me to step up, I always will,” he said.
“They helped me out when I first moved here so, I’ll do the same for them.”
