The Borenore based winery won gold for a 2014 shiraz and a bronze medal for a 2015 chardonnay at the 2016 KPMG Sydney Royal Wine Show.
The wine show had 1000 medal winning wines from across Australia this year with judging completed on Thursday, July 21 and awards announced at a dinner on Thursday, July 28.
Among the gold medalists were Cooks Lot for a 2015 riesling and Windowrie Estate at Canowindra, which was awarded gold for a family reserve pinot noir.
“It’s not the first time we’ve won a golf medal but this is the first year we’ve made this particular wine so we are really rapt we were able to get a gold medal on the first attempt,” said Windowrie Estate wine maker Anthony D’Onise.
Angullong Vineyard, Brangayne of Orange, Philip Shaw Wines, Roaring Fork Wine Co and Ross Hill Wine Group were also awarded silver and bronze medals.
Heifer Station Wines sales manager James Thomas said there was a celebration and a bottle of the winery’s sparking wine was popped open when they found out about the gold medal.
He said the top wine has peppery aromatics, blackberry fruit and a hint of violet with mid body texture and fine tannins.
“The wine also won gold at the Orange Wine Show as well as the Royal Easter Wine Show,” Mr Thomas said.
He said warm conditions benefited the shiraz grapes in the 2014 harvest and there was good wine making.
