Labor MLC Walt Secord dredged up tweets from more than five years ago as the opening salvo in the battle for Orange.
Mr Barrett tweeted about how great the sunny weather in Brisbane was compared to the winter in Orange.
“Living in Brisbane and not missing the cold weather in Orange at all,” Mr Barrett tweeted in 2011.
It was something Mr Secord believed was inappropriate for a candidate.
“I am absolutely gobsmacked that the Nationals would preselect a candidate who hates the weather in the Central West,” Mr Secord said.
He said he had already visited Orange twice and had loved the weather “unlike Mr Barrett”.
Mr Barrett brushed off the comments about the weather and said everyone enjoyed a bit of sunshine.
“There’s no one who’s done a few days work in and around Orange who hasn’t longed for a bit of summer weather,” he said.
