This year’s Toyota Cup premiership is anyone’s for the taking with eight-time consecutive champions Robin Hood leading the way this winter, but having it far from all their own way in 2016.
The immediate threat appears to be Vipers, a side sitting second by percentages only, with both Hood and the teal and black bibs locked on 22 competition points.
But that’s not where the challengers end.
Proving to be every bit the contenders, the Royal Hawks and Life Studio make up the rest of the top four, with the two blues on 20 points and last year’s runners-up a point back on 19, in fourth.
Life Studio has knocked off Robin Hood this season, while Royal Hawks knocked off the Vipers by two goals earlier in the year before dropping the return clash by just one.
The Vipers have beaten Life Studio by a single goal as well, while Robin Hood got the job done against Hawks by just two goals in round five.
There’s not a lot of room for error in any of those games.
“It’s the closest I’ve seen it,” Jasprizza said.
“I’ve been involved for 10 years and I couldn’t tell you who is going to win any of the games. It’s exciting to watch.”
After a month-long break for the school holidays, netball returns to the court this Saturday and the resumption of the competition couldn’t be with a bigger bang.
Vipers take on Robin Hood from 1.10pm while Life Studio and Hawks go head-to-head in two “cracking games to start off with”.
“The top four going at it to start off with, it’s fantastic,” Jasprizza said.
“All of the clubs have worked really hard to develop their players over the last few seasons.
“There’s a few girls out from various teams with injury and pregnancy and that sort of thing, that happens every year, but in general the depth across the board this year is great.”
Jasprizza was adamant the rise in competition wasn’t just limited to the premiership’s top four.
She said, with six weeks until the finals begin, KWS 1sts is a side looming on the edge of a semi-final spot that could push the top four.
“They’ve rebuilt nicely over the last few years and they’re playing great as well,” Jasprizza added.
“Kinross is like a lot of teams that have those young girls who are coming through that are now really starting to hit their straps. It’s great.
“I can’t wait for the weekend. I’m going down there not knowing who is going to win any of the games. It’s great for the competition and it's certainly great for the girls involved.”
KWS 1sts will get their chance to edge closer to the top four when they play Robin Hood Craig Harvey Mechanical Repairs this weekend while Life Studio Mid West Eyes and High A will face off in the final game of round nine.
All of the clubs have worked really hard to develop their players over the last few seasons.
