WITH the extremely wet period we are currently experiencing it is the ideal time to draw an obvious conclusion as to the best way forward for all the sealed streets and roads in our local government area. This conclusion is that council needs to abandon the use of 20th century bitumen in favour of hot mix road surfacing. The current situation is that constant pothole patching, although essential for this outdated bitumen surface, is in the long term a serious waste of our money and unless repairs can be carried out in a manner that will last more than a week or two if we are lucky, then all future spending should be on using hot mix or other such equivelant product. I therefore ask our councillors to implement this change as a matter of some urgency as the extra money spent will pay handsome dividends in the long run.

Election reflections
NOW that some of the dust has begun to settle after the recent federal election, I’m sure that most people would agree with the following quotation: “Politics is no game for the faint-hearted or for those whose stomachs turn to water when they read an unkind, leading article” (R. J. Southey, Liberal Party Federal President, June, 1972). While on the subject of elections, I’m reminded of Pauline Hanson’s reply when asked what One Nation’s environment policy was at an earlier election. “We don’t have such a policy, because people no longer throw rubbish out of car windows like they used to.” Says it all, really.

NSW gone to the dogs
I AM writing this letter as both a greyhound enthusiast and a very alarmed member of the NSW community that is concerned about the future of the NSW economic state if the current Liberal government have their way by ceasing greyhound racing as of July 2017.
Firstly I am extremely disappointed that Mr Baird has come out and banned greyhound racing without firstly proposing this through parliament.
Mr Baird has stated that he will be forwarding the proposal when parliament resumes. He should have initially informed the public that this was only a proposal instead of saying that greyhound racing will be banned. Sounds like he has decided this himself without consulting.
Has Mr Baird thought about how this will affect thousands of people in his state? Mr Baird do you realise the amount of employment that greyhound racing contributes into the NSW economy?
Through betting greyhound racing generates excess of $300 million dollars every year. Mr Baird can you please tell me where they are going to get that sort of money back?
Another area that is a concern for me regarding the closing of the industry is the employment of all people that are associated with the greyhound racing industry. There will be more people affected than just the trainers and owners of this industry.\
For example, the meat industries such as abattoirs, the transport industry, as well as hotels where people like to have a bet on them.
In closing, I want to leave people with this thought; punishing the majority for what a small minority have done is exactly the same as banning all motor vehicles because of a few drink drivers.
Yours faithfully,
