Orange City Council will consider a development application tomorrow night allowing a path to be built from the school's southern side, through an underpass at the Northern Distributor Road to connect to the council's wetlands loop cycleway.
Walking or cycling to school is currently prohibited for OAGS students because Murphy Lane and Hewitt Close are considered too dangerous.
Principal Louis Stringer said health choices made as a child shaped adult choices.
“If we say it's dangerous and we don't do anything about it and come up with a solution, I think that's poor management,” he said.
“I've never worked at a school that doesn't have a bike rack and riding to school is a rite of passage.”
Hewitt Close residents wrote submissions saying the street would become a kiss and drop area, but Mr Stringer said the proposal would not involve the road.
“What it'll do is reduce the amount of traffic,” he said.
