Group members recently donated more than 30 knitted and crocheted blankets to Housing Plus for women’s refuges and those who are experiencing homelessness.
Since 2010, group members have supported not-for-profit organisation Wrap with Love through their weekly meetings at Orange City Library.
Knit-In coordinator and librarian Trudi Mayfield said group members aimed to break last year’s donation record of 443 wraps.
“The group would like to thank everyone who donated yarn, who knitted and sewed wraps together,” Ms Mayfield said.
“So far this year 160 wraps have been completed but we need your help to break last year’s record,”
“If you can knit, crochet or sew, we would love your help.”
Ms Mayfield said donations of 8 ply yarn (acrylic or wool) were always needed and gratefully accepted by the group.
Orange Purlers member Dianne Percy said she never missed a week with the group.
“It’s a great community, we’ve made friends and helped people at the same time,” Ms Percy said.
“It’s a feel-good thing when you finish a rug, it’s a rush of euphoria – I can’t speak more highly of it.”
Ms Percy said group members believed it was essential to help others.
”I don’t feel greedy living in this country, having everything available to me – I really feel like I'm giving back” she said.
Wrap with Love’s motto is ‘Cold humanity is our concern, people caring about other people’.
The organisation has distributed more than 400,000 wraps to people in need locally, nationally and internationally.
For those who are interested in joining the Orange Purlers, their annual knit-in morning tea will be held on Thursday, July 21 from 10am at Orange City Library.
In addition to this, the group meets every Thursday from 9am to 12pm at the library.
