While there wasn’t as much snow for skiing or tobogganing as there was on last year it didn’t stop snowball fights among students heading to and from school.
Monday was the coldest day recorded in the 19 years that the automatic weather station at Orange Airport has been operating. The temperature didn’t crawl above two degrees all day, keeping just below the record of 2.1 degrees set in July, 2000.
Redmond Oval
ALTHOUGH the cold and wet weather are causing some delays, work at Redmond Oval is still on track to have it available for the December Millthorpe Markets and to be open for business next summer.
The picket fence to surround the oval is ready to go and just awaits an improvement in the weather and condition of the ground to be installed.
The new access road connecting Park and Boomerang streets along the school side of the oval will also be constructed when conditions improve.
This will provide a drop-off zone for the school and traffic mitigation measures such as speed humps will be used to discourage its use as a shortcut.
A grant of $4,500 has been received from the NSW Government Sport and Recreation Department for the cricket pitch which will be used for synthetic grass cover and the fit-out of the sports equipment shed. A grant is being sought for additional lighting of the oval.
The new kiosk is all-but finished except for the kitchen and work will begin on removing the old kiosk and refurbishing the rotunda soon.
The terraced seating in the northeast corner of the oval is completed and looks like a great facility for spectators.
Historic homes
WELL-KNOWN local historian John Willing has begun compiling a book of historic homes of Millthorpe and district to celebrate the village’s sesqui-centenary in 2017.
It will feature about 60 homes and include professional photos of the homes as well as appropriate older black and white photos.
The stories in the book will come from the home owners themselves and emphasise the history and interesting characteristics of the homes.
