Orange residents are being asked to look in their linen cupboard and donate towels, pillows, blankets and doonas they don't use to the animal welfare groups.

Veterinary surgeon at Mulberry Lane Pet Clinic Sunita Neville said, contrary to some opinions, animals feel the cold conditions as much as their owners.

"There are a number of things you can do to keep your pet warm such as a trampoline bed that is up off the floor, extra blankets, a coat, the warm discs you put in the microwave or even electric blankets for pets," Ms Neville said.

"Placing their kennel inside a garage is another option and owners need to find a system that works for them and that can involve a number of measures.

Blossoms Rescue spokesperson Laura Ferguson said during cold weather and storms it is important to provide pets adequate shelter.

The RSPCA is closed on Tuesday.
