Thanks to the tutoring and ongoing support of TAFE Western’s highly skilled and specialised disability consultants and teaching workforce, he was able to overcome several obstacles to start a dream career. After 25 years in the construction industry, a degenerative eye condition left Wayne without a driver’s licence. His decreasing eyesight meant he needed a career change, so he enrolled in a Certificate III in Community Services Course at TAFE, which led to employment with Mission Australia.
“Going back to studying was really difficult because of my disability and because I hadn’t studied for three decades,” he said. “The only reason I was able to adjust was because of the TAFE teachers who went above and beyond to help me.
“So to all the people out there who have disabilities, don’t let that stop you. TAFE really does offer life-changing experiences.”
