Group 10 and Central West Rugby Union games have been affected, with councils across the region forced to close grounds after record rain-fall numbers in June were then followed by snow, with a large dumping recorded in Orange.
Orange City Council announced it was closing all city-owned grounds on Friday afternoon.
Those closures mean no senior or junior soccer at Jack Brabham this weekend, while senior rugby league games have also been postponed.
Orange Hawks was scheduled to host the Mudgee Dragons at Wade Park on Sunday, while the same venue was locked in for the Orange Barbarians and Villages United New Era Cup clash on Saturday. Both have been postponed.
It comes in the wake of a host of closures around the region, with Lithgow City Council shutting Tony Luchetti Sportsground and Bathurst City Council closing the Sportsground.
The Lithgow Workies and Oberon Tigers clash and the Bathurst St Pat’s and Cowra Magpies fixtures have been postponed as a result.
The only Group 10 game set to go ahead is the Bathurst Panthers and Blayney Bears game on Saturday at Carrington Park, with council recently investing as much as $100,000 into the ground’s playing surface to ensure it’s up to NRL standard.
Group 10 president Linore Zamparini said there was little that could be done in the face of such conditions.
And he revealed the Group 10 executive committee has floated the idea of pushing back the September 18 grand final date to help accommodate another round of regular season fixtures.
“We thought it was coming,” he said, the Workies and Blayney fixture in round nine has already been postponed.
“We’ve been mindful of it and with a number of games already booked in for the round (on August 7) we allowed for bad weather, we might look at pushing the competition back.”
Orange City Council said the move to close grounds was in the wake of “unchartered territory with the wettest June on record”.
“Understandably the grounds are saturated,” a council spokeman said.
“Sir Jack Brabham and Wade Park had sports scheduled but won’t be available this weekend.
“We know people want to get out and play but the winter codes have a long way to go this season and we need to ensure the grounds are managed in such a way that the available as much as possible in the coming weeks and months.
“Protecting the surfaces this weekend is part of that management.
“Even if it clears (on Saturday) we aren’t going to get the sort of improvement we need to let games go ahead.”
Grounds have been closed in Blayney as well ahead of the weekend and the further abhorrent conditions anticipated.
Orange Emus’ Blowes Clothing Cup fixture against the Dubbo Roos has been moved from No.1 Oval to Bardon Park, while Orange City’s clash with the Mudgee Wombats at Jubilee Oval, Mudgee, has been postponed as well.
"Playing on fields that are wet causes major damage that can force fields to be closed for long periods of time," a Blayney council spokesperson said.
