Led by a brilliant treble from fiery striker Samara Beasley, the red and blues blasted home five goals to smash the Dubbo Blue Jays 5-0 at the Orange Hockey Centre and maintain an unbeaten run that now stretches three weeks after consecutive 1-all draws with Bathurst Souths and Parkes.
For a club that has lost 58 games across 68 fixtures since the start of the 2012 season, it’s a feat worth noting.
“They’re starting to believe they can do it now. It’s a long time coming,” coach Fiona Reith said.
“I keep banging on about momentum every week, and [these results] builds that for them to keep going forward.
“The girls are training hard. We’re back to basics. I’m a no-frills type of coach, we’ve gone right back to basics.”
Those basics took a while to find their mark in this round nine contest, with each side’s respective goalkeeper - Lilli Campbell for Feds and Sammy Lincoln for the Blue Jays - starring between the sticks with some sensation stops.
Feds were the first to find the mark though, with Millah Allcorn capitalising on her side’s third short corner chance of the half before Beasley bagged her first of the afternoon, finishing off some great lead-up play from Eva Reith-Snare and Pip Mannix to bump the lead out to 2-0 at half-time.
Annabelle Tierney then got the ball rolling in the second term with a lovely little touch on a Reith-Snare pass on the 40-minute mark.
Rounding out an fierce half - one that produced a bit of push and shove as well as a yellow card for Belinda Lewis - Beasley completed goals two and three to complete the rout, her third bringing the vocal Feds supporters to their feet mainly due to the surprised look on Beasley’s face after she managed to score with her back to the goal.
Blue Jays vice-captain Emily Lake was straight to the point after embarrassing loss in Orange.
“It was pretty average overall,” she said.
“We went out wanting to win, it was a do-or-die kind of match and obviously the result doesn’t show how hard we played.”
With Reith-Snare and Grace Evans patrolling the mid-field, Feds looked the far superior outfit.
Reith-Snare believes a more composed approach made the world of difference.
“Our big word for today was composure and we held our ground, held our attitude and decision making ... we didn’t panic, and that paid off for us today,” she added.
They’ll need that in spades next week, with Feds set to tackle competition leaders Lithgow Panthers.
