Owner of Gardiner Road Mini Market Lucky Singh says sales of his “cheap” milk, Dairy Choice, have decreased while Dairy Farmers milk has become more popular.
“It’s only been in the last couple of days the expensive milk has started to sell more,” he said.
“We have had a lot of customers talking about Dairy Farmers and how they would rather go with that milk rather than the cheap one.
“Dairy Choice is our cheap option and that has slowed down a bit”.”
Mr Singh said that although he supports local milk companies, he will continue to give his customers an option.
“We want to support both - we don’t want to go just one way,” he said.
“We are salesman here and we need to give them a choice - it’s not up to us it’s up to our customers.”
Consumers across Australia have continued to campaign on social media over the past week to get more customers at Coles and Woolworths in particular, buying local brand milk, as opposed to the supermarket giants’ cheap, self-branded milk.
Owner of Scrumptious on Summer Suzy Glasby said her business is also behind the dairy farmers.
“We only buy Dairy Farmers milk because we like to support local farmers,” she said.
“We’ve got to stop worrying about the price and look after our farmers because they’re just not getting paid enough money.”
A team member at Coles Orange said he had received no indication they will cease selling any products in the milk section and that Coles is doing its best to maintain availability of all the milk it sells.
A representative from Woolworths Orange said they have processes in place to ensure shelves are as full as possible.
