More than half a million children across the country were expected to take part in the reading event in more than 3000 locations that included schools, libraries and childcare centres in Orange and its surrounding area.
Run by the Australian Library and Information Association, National Simultaneous Storytime has been taking place annually for the past 16 years to encourage more young Australians to read and enjoy books.
Orange Regional Library ran two events, one at Courallie Park Child Development Centre and one at the library where young children and library staff wore hats while this year’s text I Got This Hat by Jol and Kate Temple and illustrated by Jon Foye was read aloud.
The book, which was read at all events across the country was a rhyming tale about hats around the world.
Orange librarian Sean Brady said about 30 children attended this year’s library event with parents or carers, and there were about 40 children who took part in storytime at Courallie Park.
“It was well attended and it was very fun,” he said.
“[At the library] we had the story and we had some dancing, we had a Mexican Hat Dance, which everyone participated in.”
National Simultaneous Storytime is held during Library and Information Week, which is taking place this week from May 23 to 29.
