Orange’s Push for Palliative is one of many community groups focused on attracting more state and federal funding for the provision of adequate palliative care for those who choose to spend their final days at home or, if that is not possible, in a hospital or aged care facility.
While many cities and hospitals across NSW have designated palliative care beds, a ward, or even a hospice, Orange is not yet at that stage with a perception there is a disconnect between what families want and what can realistically be provided in the system as it currently exists.
The forum will provide an insight into plans for the future to cope with the anticipated growth in numbers of people needing palliative care, and how patients and their families can access appropriate medical and support services.
Families with a loved one in a nursing home also need guarantees they will have a pain-free dignified end of life.
Family members faced with the reality of making choices about palliative care, can find it a stressful and confusing time, so any systems put in place to streamline that process will be welcomed in many sectors of the community including by general practitioners who often care for patients for years, however due to systems now in place are often shut out from the care process at the end of life.
