The long ride to help

BY 2pm today triathlon coach Dan Benton had pedalled 90 kilometres but had not moved an inch.

Mr Benton is currently on a stationary bike in the middle of a 24-hour cycle challenge in order to help out a mate.

He has set himself the challenge to help out friend and work colleague Toby Te Rupe, whose young daughter is currently undergoing chemotherapy treatment in Sydney.

When the Central Western Daily caught up with him four hours into his ride today he was busy eating a sandwich and joking with friends who had come along to support him.

"I've already had a Portuguese burger and snickers bars," he said.

Mr Benton said many of his friends and people he coaches have signed up to support him through the challenge.

They will ride alongside him on another stationary bike with a roster system of extra riders worked out.

With almost 20 hours left to go in the ride Mr Benton said he is starting to feel a sore spot.

"I'm a little sore in the tail bone but everything else is very good," he said.

Head down to Fitness Perfection on March Street to support the cause before he finishes the ride at 10am tomorrow.

By the end of the 24-hours Mr Benton said he expects to have cycled for around 480 kilometres and hopefully raised substantial funds for Wairangi and her family.
