GIVEN his side extended its Orange District Football Association All Age A and B winning streak to three on Saturday and has scored an astounding 27 goals in their last three outings, there’s little surprise Waratahs FC are exuding confidence.
While FC are third - behind Waratahs City and Barnestoneworth United - the side has hit its straps in the last three weeks after a season-opening loss to sit just one point behind second and boast easily the best goal difference in the competition.
FC followed up their wins over Millthorpe Tigers (5-3) and Barbarians (16-2) with a 6-0 trouncing of Kinross at Jack Brabham Park on Saturday, with cannon-footed attacking midfielder Craig Sugden notching another brace.
He’s slotted seven in his last three outings, surpassed only by fellow striker Nick Bennett, who’s potted eight.
“It’s starting to come together a bit,” FC front man Steve Sharp said. “We’re clicking a bit better than in previous weeks, our ball movement is improving and so is our control when we press forward.
“[Saturday’s] end result suggests it was pretty easy for us, but it wasn’t really. Kinross did well. They’re young and they’re fit, and they went with us for a fair period of that game.
“We did run away with it a bit but that was more experience coming to the fore than anything I think.”
Along with Sugden’s double Bennett, James Taylor and Tim Kelly all found the back of the net while Ryan Sinclair converted from the penalty spot.
“He slotted it, thankfully, because he managed to put about six or seven other shots over, or wide. Plenty of them went straight into the dam at the back of the field too,” Sharp laughed.
“A few of the new guys really stood out on the weekend. Michael Tierney and Stephen Cooper were both outstanding. They both came to our side this season.
“[Sugden] was good too, he’s pretty consistent most weeks.”
City maintained top spot with a 1-0 win over Barnestoneworth’s B side, while Barnies’ top XI did the same with an 11-0 rout of CYMS Imagine8.
In Saturday’s other games Waratahs Old Boys trumped Waratahs Wolfpack 5-1, Millthorpe scored their first win of the season over Barbarians 10-0, while Saints and Waratahs FC B drew 1-1.
