Emergency services rushed to the area at 9pm on Thursday night after the man had doused himself in petrol with concerns he was going to set himself alight.
Inspector Dave Harvey of Orange police congratulated emergency services on the way they dealt with the man to avoid serious injuries.
“Everyone did a terrific job,” he said.
Inspector Harvey said when police and other emergency services arrived at the house the man was out the front after setting fire to the lounge and dousing himself in petrol.
He ran from police but was stopped and arrested after a short foot pursuit.
According to police the man was taken by ambulance to Orange Health Service where he was treated for minor injuries and is undergoing further treatment.
“When he is in a position to do so, police will interview the man as part of our ongoing investigation,” Inspector Harvey said.
