IT’S often said knowledge is power.
Go4Fun is a NSW Health initiative designed to support children and families to achieve healthier lifestyles, handing them the information to be able to successfully beat the childhood obesity epidemic.
One in four children is now overweight or obese and western Go4Fun co-ordinator Jenny Hunt says it’s imperative parents and children alike are given the opportunity to learn ways to better tackle just what to put in their mouth.
“Obviously obesity is increasing to the point one in four children is now overweight or obese. The health repercussions that go along with something like that are quite severe, but it’s about self esteem as well,” Ms Hunt said.
“We’re trying to halt what has been referred to as the obesity epidemic through early intervention.
“It’s about setting realistic goals and rewards. How to make change, make smart goals so children can see the results.
“It’s not a diet, there’s no meal plans. It’s just about getting better education out there and setting up strategies for change and information about nutrition.”
The program is aimed at children above the healthy weight level between the ages of seven to 13 years of age.
Participants meet twice a week for 10 weeks in a fun, interactive program including parents or carers.
It’s free and aimed at getting children fitter, healthier and happier.
“There is evidence to suggest the program works,” she said of the Go4Fun currently being run in New Zealand, Europe, Canada as well as Australia.
“It’s developed by paediatric dieticians and clinical psychologists.”
The program is run once it has eight children signed on to participate.
