AFTER Mudgee ended Orange Cycle and Triathlon Club’s five-year dominance of the Central West Inter-Club Triathlon Series last year, the Piranhas made winning the trophy back their number one priority this summer.
They did just that on the weekend.
Trailing Mudgee narrowly prior to yesterday’s final leg, Piranhas president Michael Lockyer sent out a call to arms to the club’s members to turn out at Lake Canobolas in a bid to win back the competition lead, and with it the 2015-16 title.
They answered, which ultimately led to the OCTC claiming the title by just 19 points.
Under the amended scoring system - which brings smaller clubs back to the field by adjusting points based on the number of racing members - the Piranhas finished on 996, with Mudgee (977), Cowra (897), Bathurst (749) and Dubbo (430) finishing second, third, fourth and fifth respectively.
“I’m really, really pleased,” Lockyer said.
“We made it our priority to win it back, so it’s great to see we did that.
“It was tight, but we got there. Mudgee did really well and Cowra ended up being the bolter.”
Orange’s Janet Martin also claimed the overall women’s championship, with fellow Piranhas Kinisha Roweth and Jane Middleton finishing second and third respectively.
Bathurst’s Nick North won the men’s prize, and yesterday’s main race, from clubmate Mark Windsor, with Orange’s Jack Bilton third.
“It’s great to see the Orange guys winning there, particularly Kinisha and Jack as youngsters,” Lockyer said.
“Our women were again really dominant this season, but the juniors in the club are coming along incredibly too.”
North produced a dominant performance yesterday to win the main race, clocking 55 minutes, 45 seconds.
He clocked 5.12 in the 400m swim, 31.01 in the 20km cycle and 18.52 in the 5km run to win from Mudgee’s Matt Webster (56.24) and Orange’s Robert Woolley (57.38).
Martin (1:03.16) was the first female past the post.
