LADIES admire him, men want to be like him, he’s big, he’s sweaty and he can chop through 30cm of wood in 12 hits.
David Foster is the first person to win 1000 championships in his chosen sport, wood chopping.
He has won 185 world championships and is coming to the Australian National Field Days to show how it’s done.
And anyone who lives in Orange and has a wood heater knows how difficult cutting wood can be in 3 degree temperatures.
“Like most things it’s about the amount of time you put into doing it,” he said.
“There’s no trick it’s just hard work.”
Mr Foster said wood chopping for him was about holding on to an important part of Australian history.
“It’s the art of our ancestors, they cleaved their way through the country side,” he said.
Mr Foster weighs 155 kilograms and is 197cm tall. He says that’s the first thing people notice about him. The most common response is “that bastard’s big”.
Mr Foster holds too many world records to name but he is humble about his achievements.
“I’m lucky to be gifted in being a very good wood chopper,” he said.
But it is more than that for Mr Foster. It’s a family tradition. His father was a champion wood chopper and his son is following in his footsteps.
He says the best part about his sport is the social side and he loves chatting to people who come to watch.
“You’ve got to enjoy what you do in life to be successful,” Mr Foster said.
