An Australian man is facing five years' jail after he allegedly hit the manager of a Bali nightclub after refusing to pay a drinks bill.
Scott Dobson, 53, from Merriwa in Western Australia, has been accused of assaulting Canadian Kenneth James Wickes at the Sky Garden in September 2013.
The Denpasar district court heard Mr Dobson and two friends were drinking beer and vodka at 3am on September 27, 2013, in one of Bali's best known night spots.
According to the indictment, both Mr Dobson, an importer, and his two friends, Ben Stevens and Alex Bajawa, had no money when the bill came and refused to pay.
"The victim asked: 'What's going on? I have three staff report you are being rude and refusing to pay for drinks. What is the problem?'," the court heard.
Mr Dobson allegedly hit Mr Wickes on the nose, causing him to fall to the floor.
"The defendant then kicked with his right leg, twice hitting the victim's face while his left leg stepped on the victim's chest," the court heard.
Security was called and Mr Dobson was taken outside.
Mr Wickes allegedly suffered bruising to his right eye, cuts to his upper lip, a broken tooth and a broken left jaw.
About 40 supporters of Mr Wickes were present at the trial.
Head judge Ni Made Sukereni warned them to keep quiet.
"Visitors please remove your sunglasses and hats. The panel of judges do not wish for any shouting and commotion during the trial," he said.
Mr Dobson is being incarcerated in Bali's Kerobokan jail, where some of the Bali nine heroin smugglers are also imprisoned.
The trial has been adjourned until March 2.
