THE fields are in for Orange Harness Racing Club’s Carnival of Cups meet on Sunday and the most sought-after prize of the entire event, the Kent’s H Hardware Banjo Paterson Cup (2260m), looks more than likely to head to Bathurst once again.
In a natural by-product of OHRC moving their meetings from Highlands Paceway to Bathurst’s College Road complex, a much larger number of the latter city’s trainers are able to nominate - boosting the field significantly.
So much so of the 13-strong field for the Banjo Paterson Cup nine come from Bathurst stables, or stables directly surrounding Bathurst.
Steve Turnbull, Ashlee Grives (formerly Siejka), Pete Trevor-Jones, Bernie Hewitt, Nathan Hurst and Wendy Turnbull all have charges running in the 2260m race on Sunday.
Of those nine all eyes will be on Steve Turnbull and his grey I’m Blue Double Dee, with the duo gunning for a second consecutive Banjo Paterson Cup win.
Turnbull claimed the 2015 Banjo Paterson Cup easily at Highlands Paceway last year and while they face far stiffer competition this year the big grey’s form suggests they’re a real chance once again.
The main event is the seventh of a bumper eight-race program and has been bolstered massively compared to last year’s event, where there was just eight runners.
In fact, acceptances are up by a tick under 25 per cent from last year’s Carnival of Cups meet.
