Work is due to start this month on the roundabout at the intersection of Peisley and Byng streets, with the bitumen to be completed removed and replaced with hot mix asphalt.
Byng Street between Lords Place and Sale Street, including the Anson Street roundabout, is also set to be resurfaced, as well as the Northern Distributor Road between William Maker Drive and the Burrendong Way.
Asphalt work will also occur in Ash Street and Byng Street between Clinton and Sampson streets after prior stabilisation work, while a shallow water main in Hill Street will be relocated before work continues there.
Reconstruction has started on the Burrendong Way at Wiradjuri Place.
Infrastructure Policy Committee chair and councillor Glenn Taylor said people would start seeing a noticeable difference in Orange’s roads.
“The most pleasing thing for me is the hot mix program - we’re trying to find the money and we’re finding the money,” he said.
Cr Taylor anticipated most of the work would be conducted at night to minimise traffic disruption.
The work was welcomed by Beaurepaires store manager Troy Gowen, who said it had been a long time coming.
“We see the workmen come and do a patch-up job - it lasts a few weeks and they’re there again, so it needs a good solid repair done,” he said.
Ashcroft’s Supa IGA owner Ian Ashcroft, whose business lies at the Peisley and Byng streets intersection, also welcomed the roadworks.
“It’s unacceptable for a major road like Peisley Street, it’s just an unfortunate thing with Orange with the winter and the rain,” he said.
“Nobody has the money to fix every road in Orange but people believe the council probably has the best intentions to fix them and this will give them just a bit more confidence they’re spending the money in the right place.”
The big fix ... work completed in December and January:
- Heaving patching at Leeds Parade.
- Drainage improvements at Ploughmans Lane, Clinton Street, Hill Street and Robertson Park.
- Root-damaged footpath replaced in Sale Street, work soon to start in Kite Street.
- Auxiliary spillway at Suma Park Dam 80 per cent complete, with one fusegate yet to be built - the raising of the main spillway and work on the outlet tower is ongoing.
