Brown, currently Basketball ACT's high-performance director, is one of several highly respected coaches watching the Capitals' situation closely after Carrie Graf quit her post after 15 seasons last week.

University of Canberra officials are in the midst of a review into the program, and will wait until it is finalised before focusing on the search for a replacement.

Brown is a former long-time head coach of the Australian Institute of Sport's women's program, guiding the team to the 1998-99 WNBL title.

"I'd certainly be interested in having a discussion with officials once they complete that review, [when] they have some things in place on where they want to go in the future, not just the next year but five or 10 years from now," Brown said.

"It's too early to really go any further until you see what they want to do with the program.

"2014 was the first time in 35 years I hadn't been involved with a team – to some degree you miss the camaraderie of being with a team and going on a journey through the ups and downs.

"To get back in the league and coach some of those players I've coached previously in a different environment has some appeal, for certain."

Brown's long tenure at the AIS means development is one of his strengths, an aspect likely to come under heavy focus in the Capitals review.

The Capitals currently do not have an official junior academy, and plans are in place to strengthen the relationship between Basketball ACT, junior programs and Canberra's women's SEABL team.

Potential applicants are attracted by the fact the Capitals job is one of the few full-time posts in the league, and the chance to put their own stamp on a franchise propping up the ladder.

Australian Gems under-19 coach Paul Goriss is also based in Canberra at the Basketball Australia Centre of Excellence but it is understood he is happy in his role and would only look seriously at the Capitals position if it remained full-time after the review is finalised.

Another potential candidate could be sacked Sydney Kings and current Australian Opals assistant Damian Cotter.

His wife has links with Canberra and it is understood Opals head coach Brendan Joyce would not stand in his assistant's way should he wish to hold a club gig at the same time.

The Capitals are winless through 21 games this season and have three games remaining to break their duck.

Canberra skipper Carly Wilson last week urged haste on settling on a new coach, or risk giving rival clubs a headstart with recruitment.
