Through Australian charity Compassion, the school banded together to raise enough money to sponsor three children in poverty-stricken countries Guatemala, India and Indonesia.
The sponsorship will enable the children to learn new skills and receive education so they have a better chance at life and future employment.
Led by students Hannah Khalil and Caleb Hewitt, the school began the initiative to raise enough money to support the children for a year.
“Each stage of the school has a child to look after,” Hannah said.
“Year 7 and 8 are looking after a child from Guatemala, year 9 and 10 are looking after a girl from India and 11 and 12 are looking after a little boy in Indonesia.”
On Friday, February 5, they held a fundraiser to fill a chalk map of each country drawn in the school’s quadrangle with gold coins and already reached their yearly goal.
“People have been really supportive, bringing $10, $15 each so that is really good,” Caleb said at the event.
“The idea for this fundraiser was to get it kick-started for this year, so sort out half the year’s funds, which would be just under $400 for each child, but I think we’ve well exceeded that.”
After the coins were laid out on the map and collected, students and teachers counted the coins which totalled $2,106.
