A 49-year-old Cudal mother of two is in a serious but stable condition in Orange Base Hospital following a head on collision on a down-hill stretch of the Mitchell Highway 30 kms south of Wellington.
Police say a Toyota Hilux driven by a Quirindi man heading toward Molong is alleged to have crossed to the wrong side of the road and a woman driving a Ford Falcon towards Wellington took evasive action and the two cars were involved in a head on accident just after 6am this morning.
The children in the Ford Falcon wagon aged 7 and 8 were badly shaken in the accident but have no other reported injury, while the driver of the Hilux though shocked said at the scene he was fine. He has a minor head injury.
Police on the scene said they were astonished the injuries to woman, her children and the other driver weren’t more serious, as they looked the devastating scene which happened on a sunny, clear morning.
Police say fatigue may be a factor in the accident.
Heavy holiday traffic heading on both sides of the highway moved slowly past accident, Wellington State Emergency Services personnel assisted police in controlling the flow and direction of traffic.
The accident has happened as police warn that Operation Slowdown is in force and they warn people to ‘keep to the speed limits and take extra care’.
