WET weather over the weekend affected numbers at yesterday’s Orange Saddle up Sunday meeting but it didn’t dampen spirits.
Racegoer Sarah Boys, 24, said she would have come rain, hail or shine. She said she loved the atmosphere, putting a sneaky fiver on a horse with an interesting name and getting dressed up.
She said it was the quietest race meet she’d been to.
“It’s quiet because of the weather and it’s grand final weekend,” she said.
“If it was warmer there would have been more.”
Miss Boys has attended eight or nine race meetings in Orange.
Racing Orange chair Ellie Brown said she was pleased with the turnout. She predicted about 1500 people passed through the gates at about 2pm. Mrs Brown had said many prayers for good weather over the last 24 hours.
“It’s better than we expected, it’s unfortunate the weather was like it was but we are blessed with a stellar day,” Mrs Brown said.
She said the highlight of the day would have to be having fashion designers Wayne Cooper and George Spyrou attend to judge fashions on the field. She said she believes organisers covered all angles.
“Yes, we’re absolutely thrilled with the day,” she said.
“It wouldn’t be possible without our sponsors and support crew.”
Like most of the ladies, punters Kym and Jackie Glasson wore sky high heels to the event. They said they were thrilled organisers thought to put extra chairs out on the grass.
“It’s great to have somewhere to sit and rest,” Kym said.
“It’s also really good to be allowed into the sports bar this time, it was VIP only last time,” Jackie said.
