COMPETITION will be fierce when Orange City Bowling Club hosts the NSW Deaf Singles Championships from tomorrow.
The best deaf bowlers from around the state will come to Orange to play for the men’s and women’s singles titles.
Many of the bowlers competing are the top players from their own clubs meaning the state titles will be tough competition.
One player to look out for is Walcha’s Brian Lockyer who has won five international deaf singles titles.
Defending NSW champion Robert Fredericks will return to try and claim back-to-back titles.
Twenty-four men will compete in the singles competition.
They have been divided into eight sections of three and will play a round robin within their section.
The top bowler from each section will progress to the knock-out rounds until a winner is decided.
There are five women playing for the singles title and they will play each other once to decide the winner.
The women’s competition might be small in number but there’s plenty of experience with Toni-Rose Robson and Elizabeth Taber having represented Australia on the international stage before.
The singles titles are not the only trophies up for grabs during the four-day event, which is being organised by Orange’s Tony Gorringe.
On Sunday, the Jack Shaw City/Country Shield will be played which will be a mixed competition.
On Sunday and Monday the Andrew Frew Shield will be played for.
This brings regional teams together in a round robin competition to take out the shield.
The Western team will include Orange’s Leslie Maxwell and Peter Griffiths, who are also lining up in the men’s singles championship.
The men’s singles will be played from 9am tomorrow at Orange City Bowling Club and will continue on Saturday morning.
The Jack Shaw Shield will also be played on Saturday morning before the women’s singles are played in the afternoon.
Sunday morning will be busy with the first and second rounds of the Andrew Frew Shield being played from 9am.
From 9.30am the five deaf women will team up to take on a hearing team from the Orange City Women’s Bowling Club.
The women’s singles will continue on Sunday afternoon and finish on Monday morning.
The final rounds of the Andrew Frew Shield will also be played on Monday morning and the presentation will be held after.
Spectators are welcome for all four days at Orange City Bowling Club.
