School of Agricultural and Wine Science’s Professor Geoff Gurr was presented with a doctor of science, while School of Management and Marketing’s Professor Kevin Parton was named an emeritus professor of the university at CSU Orange’s graduation ceremony.

Professor Gurr is the second person in CSU’s history to be awarded a doctor of science, which he said was an honour.

With an academic career of over 20 years, the professor has focused much of his research on ecological solutions to pest control in order to reduce farmers’ dependence on pesticides in Australia and South East Asia.

To be awarded the title, research from his career was put together in a portfolio and sent to a number of anonymous international judges who deemed he had made a substantial, original and sustained contribution to scientific knowledge.

“It’s another feather in your cap to be recognised by international experts,” Professor Gurr said.

“While this acknowledgement of a doctor of science is awarded to me, it really reflects the work of my team and the students who have worked with me over the years.”

Professor Parton has also had a long and successful academic career spanning over 40 years, with a main focus on agricultural management in Australia and Asian nations. He is currently helping the Philippines establish an early-warning system to predict extreme weather events like typhoons.

He said it was “quite an honour” to be named an emeritus professor in recognition for his dedication to CSU since his appointment in 2006.

“It’s been so enjoyable,” Professor Parton said. “I’ve supervised many PhD students. It’s a great thing to be able to help them in their studies.

“I’ve been able to combine both my intellectual passions and my passion to help people. I’ve been blessed in that way.”
