ORANGE police are stepping up patrols of Summer Street at night following an increase in reports of drag racing.
Inspector Bruce Grassick of said drag racing was a problem in Orange from time to time.
“The warmer nights are here, which is probably bringing more people out,” he said.
For several years Orange police have said the configuration of the main street, with a roundabout at the Hill Street intersection, was a drawcard for drag-racers.
Drivers regularly race side-by-side in the main street, exceeding the speed limit, while crowds of onlookers egg the drivers on as they drive past.
“We will be stepping up our patrols at night in the area,” Inspector Grassick said.
Yesterday Inspector Dave Harvey said additional highway patrol vehicles had been tasked to the area over the weekend.
Orange police say the use of text messaging, giving people a heads-up when police are in the area, remains a challenge.
