Although it is run by the church, Orange Baptist Church pastor Nathan Dirs says the invitation is not restricted to church members or people in need, and it usually attracts between 300 and 360 people including families.
“Our church has been the driving force behind this for the last 17 years. It was birthed from the members of our church, but it’s not just run by us,” he said.
Pastor Dirs said about 60 volunteers came from within the church, the community and other church groups, and without their help the lunch would not be possible.
“The amount of support from the wider community is phenomenal and goes on throughout the day,” he said.
“There’s a huge amount of work that goes on behind the scenes, talking to the community and businesses in the community [in the lead up to the event.”
The lunch will be a two-course buffet with Christmas carols playing to create a festive atmosphere.
“I’ve only been in town for the past seven and a half months as a new Pastor and I’m incredibly proud for the amount of work our team put on in supporting the local community,” he said.
“I’ve worked in a number of different churches in Sydney and I’ve never been a part of or seen anything like it.
“This Christmas lunch is the first I’ve ever heard of.”
The lunch will start at noon on Christmas Day.
