THE odds are not in CYMS Moroneys favour at all in Saturday’s second day of play against clubmates CYMS, but skipper Adam Smith hasn’t lost hope.
Despite Moroneys already losing on first innings, and being an ordinary-at-best chance of winning outright, Smith is focusing on the fact his side is still a chance at all.
So much so, he’s taken on a Jim Carrey quip from 1995 classic Dumb and Dumber as his mantra - “so, you’re telling me there’s a chance”.
“I don’t mind that, even though I’m not a big fan of Jim Carrey,” Smith said, a laugh emanating from under his ochre-coloured facial fuzz.
“We’ll never discount that small chance of an outright win, but I think realistically avoiding an outright loss is our first priority.
“Either way, early wickets are key. We didn’t react well to the low bounce at Riawena last weekend, and we didn’t use it at all when we went out to bowl.
“We’ll learn from that, and we’ll try to use the conditions to our benefit out there [today].”
Moroneys were skittled for 107 last week, of which Nick Wright scored 54, before CYMS claimed first innings points, making their way to 0-113 at stumps.
Openers Matt Baker and Mick Hannelly resume not out on 65 and 46 respectively, and skipper Hamish Finlayson - who returns to the side after missing last week - is hoping both will go on to make big scores.
Thinking from a team perspective, Finlayson is hoping those big scores transfer into an outright opportunity.
With second-placed Orange City on the ropes against Cavaliers, an outright victory would give his side a massive buffer atop the Orange District Cricket Association ladder.
“We’d love to put on a really big score [today], and it is a really good opportunity for Bakes and Mick to go on with it, I’d love to see them both really cash in,” Finlayson said.
“In terms of a potential outright win, it would be great to get ourselves into a position to have a crack at those extra points, but I think we’ll have to play very well to do so.”
The CYMS derby resumes at 1pm at Riawena Oval.
