ROB Parfett claimed the Ex-Services’ Country Club Open, James Conran won the Duntryleague Open and, now, the latter course’s band of dominant low markers will head to Wentworth to try and give their club a clean sweep of 2015 Open events.
The Wentworth Open kicks off on Saturday, and club professional Todd Brakenridge said with a bumper field whoever wins would need to play well, but conceded the Duntryleague players would be some of the toughest to beat.
“With Parfy winning at the Country Club, James winning at Duntry and the Bathurst Open too, it’s not difficult to see you’ve got some very dominant Central West golfers there,” Brakenridge said.
“But there are definitely some pretty good hopes from Wentworth too. Guys like Craig Coles, Jordan Clark, Steve Bray, Matt Williamson and Mark Fliedner are all low markers, so they’ll be up there I’d say.
This year is Wentworth’s 50th anniversary and, as a result, Brakenridge said everyone at the host course was hoping a local would win the 2015 title.
“It would be good to see someone from Wentworth win in the 50th year, but it will be tough to beat the dominant Duntryleague golfers,” he said.
“We’ve got 194 in the field so far for [today] so I imagine it’ll be around 140 or 150 [tomorrow].
“I think everyone’s pretty happy with that, it’s a few more than the last couple of years I think. I think this one being the third Open in Orange helps a bit, and obviously being the 50th year a few more have come in.
“We’ve seen that in the last couple of months too, there’s been more people around the course, which is good.”
