Two hundred and forty students from years 4 and 5 take part in the program that encourages children to learn about healthy food and produce. Children harvest fresh ingredients from the school's garden, then work in groups with volunteers to prepare a variety of cuisines.
Calare kitchen garden co-ordinator Vicky Bray said the lifestyle program combines all key learning areas.
"Cultural learning is taking place, along with maths and science as students are measuring quantity and volume, and literacy through reading recipes," she said.
So far, Calare's kitchen garden has hosted Rotary Club of Orange Calare members for lunch, Arthritis Australia for lunch and is hosting Diabetes Australia's Christmas party in December. Just $15 a head covers a five course meal, prepared by the students, with all funds going back into the school and school facilities.
Mrs Bray said Calare has received support from the community and shares a partnership with IGA staff, who provide $50 per week for the school to buy pantry ingredients.
Mrs Bray believes the children are learning important skills in health education.
"They have so much knowledge about ingredients and food that is wholesome," she said.
"They will take these skills with them for the rest of their life."
