A MEMBER of each ticket was elected as chair of the committees as last night’s council meeting.
Mayor John Davis was pleased at the cross-sectional representation.
“I think it’s the best selection over the whole group of elected councillors,” Cr Davis said.
Greens member Neil Jones was elected as Environment and Economic Development Committee chairperson, but has turned down the position.
Leader of group E Ron Gander was appointed Infrastructure Policy Committee chairperson.
Chris Gryllis was named Finance Policy Committee chair and deputy mayor Jeff Whitton retained his position as the chairperson of the Sustainable Development Committee.
Group F leader Russell Turner knocked back nominations for the Infrastructure Policy Committee and Environment and Economic Development Committee.
He accepted the position as chair of Orange City Traffic Committee.
The traffic committee was the last appointment of the meeting.
Newcomer Cr Gander said he had reservations about heading up the Infrastructure Policy Committee.
“If I’m supported by people who have experience, I’ll give it a shot,” he said.
Cr Hamling offered his full support.
Cr Davis said voters were equally represented.
“There’s not one side or another, it’s right across the field,” he said.
“I’m very happy.”
What the committees do:
* Infrastructure Policy Committee: Deals with the concrete assets that council manages such as roads, drains and sewerage.
* Environment and Economic Development Committee: This committee looks at a environmental concerns. This ranges from tree health to bigger picture issues such as parks, gardens and planning. This committee looks at ways to bring economic development to town for example ways to encourage new businesses.
* Finance Policy Committee- Oversees the way council manages finances such as rates, investment policies and auditing systems.
* Sustainable Development Committee: makes decisions about planning. Approves or rejects development applications.
n Traffic Committee- Looks at traffic hot spots, deals with complaints about traffic, assesses patterns of accidents.
