Both Conrans shot 69 off the stick which, as of late yesterday afternoon, had them sitting tied 28th going into today’s second round, five strokes behind Victorian amateur Ben Eccles (64) at eight under.
Although a solid start to the competition for the Duntryleague duo, both Conrans could have been much further up the leaderboard.
At one stage during his 18 holes, James Conran was five under before two consecutive bogies on his back nine brought him back to the field. He started his round perfectly with a birdies on the 10th, 12th, 13th and 17th, and turned at four under.
After a birdie on the first, to move him to five under, the Kinross Wolaroi School student suffered back-to-back bogies on five and six, before parring his last three to finish three under.
On the other hand, Steve Conran sat at four under for some time during his round before, twin bogies on his second nine saw him drop a couple of shots.
The touring professional also turned at four under, but two bogies and one more birdie on the back saw him card 69.
On Thursday afternoon Wentworth professional Todd Iffland sat tied 97th after a one over round of 73, while Duntryleague’s Andy Campbell was three over through nine.
