Davis elected mayor of Orange unopposed

JOHN Davis was reelected mayor of Orange last night unopposed.

In a process that took less than a minute and a few members of the large public gallery by surprise, he was the sole nomination when general manager Garry Styles opened the nomination box.

Mr Styles duly declared  Cr  Davis the new mayor.

There was no reaction from Cr Russell Turner who had voiced an interest in the mayor's position however first-time councillor Ron Gander said quietly to Greens Councillor Neil Jones beside him "they've done the numbers".

The election of the deputy mayor took a little longer with Cr

Jeff Whitton defeating Cr Chris Gryllis  6-5 with one informal vote.

Then it was down to business as usual.
