Russell Turner, John Davis and Reg Kidd will vie for the position of mayor at tonight's mayoral election.
HISTORY will be made at Orange City Council tonight when the city’s mayor will be elected by councillors for the last time.
Councillors John Davis and Russell Turner are firming up the numbers for tonight’s ballot, with Reg Kidd seen as an outside chance if he decides to nominate for the position.
However, if it was up to the readers of the Central Western Daily, Russell Turner would take the top job, securing the highest number of votes in an online poll * on our website yesterday.
At 4pm yesterday, Mr Turner had received 32.1 per cent of the vote or 104 votes out of 324.
He was followed closely by Reg Kidd, who scored 25 per cent of the vote. John Davis came in third with 14.8 per cent of the vote.
Although he has shown no aspirations to take on the mayor’s role, Neil Jones polled fourth, recording 10.5 per cent of the vote.
Council newcomer Kevin Duffy recorded 3.1 per cent of the poll vote, while remaining councillors Jason Hamling, Ash Brown, Glenn Taylor, Chris Gryllis, Jeff Whitton, Ron Gander and Scott Munro pulled in less than 2.5 per cent of the vote.
The results of the online poll reflected those of the recent council election, in which Cr Turner topping the vote.
Members of the public are invited to attend tonight’s meeting at the Orange City Council chambers in Byng Street where the mayoral election will get underway at 7pm.
At the recent election, 62.29 per cent of Orange residents who voted said they wanted the next mayor of the city elected by popular vote.
