The Challenge Orange was designed to showcase the Central West region to cycling enthusiasts from around Australia.
Minister for Trade, Tourism and Major Events Stuart Ayres said the event had been secured by the NSW government through its tourism and major events agency, Destination NSW.
“Orange Challenge is open to all cyclists looking to test their skills and involves a one-day 170km ride through the region, highlighting the beauty and diversity of the surrounding towns and giving visitors and their families the opportunity to spend time exploring the area,” Mr Ayres said.
Mr Ayres said the NSW government had worked with Bicycle Network to develop and secure this event for regional NSW.
He said Challenge Orange, which kicks off on March 20, is expected to attract around 3000 international and domestic visitors to the area over three years.
The event will take riders through Orange, Cudal, Canowindra and Mandurama and surrounding countryside.
Member for Orange Andrew Gee said cycling “is a great way to get out and about in regional NSW”.
“Bicycle Network is working with Orange City Council and Brand Orange to create extension events that highlight the great food and wine products on offer in our region,” Mr Gee said.
Organisers hope these additional events will give people a reason to extend their stay in the region.
Brand Orange executive officer Rhonda Sear said Challenge Orange was a “fantastic” initiative.
“This could open up a whole new market and raise the profile of Orange as a cycling destination,” Ms Sear said.
Ms Sear said the addition of food and wine events would greatly enhance the event.
“It will further push Orange up the ladder in terms of it being a significant regional destination,” she said.
