Police had received an alert about people seen taking photographs outside the State Crime Command building recently, with detectives are now questioning if it is linked at all to Friday's fatal shooting.
NSW Police have confirmed that a 15-year-old boy was the lone gunman who shot dead a police employee outside the state's headquarters in Sydney's west. Sources believe the shooting was targeted at NSW Police rather than the finance worker directly.
NSW Police Commissioner Andrew Scipione confirmed he was aware of the photograph incident but doesn't believe it is linked to Friday's shooting.
"Certainly I'm aware of a range of incidents across the state where people have been brought to our attention and I was aware of that particular photograph," he told reporters on Saturday.
"There is nothing to suggest that's got any linkage at all."
The teenager shouted religious slogans before firing one shot in the back of the head of Curtis Cheng as he was heading home on Friday afternoon.
The shooting took place outside the State Crime Command in Parramatta, home to the state's homicide, drug, Middle Eastern organised crime and gangs squad. It is located near a primary and high school.
It is understood some members of the gunman's family had just returned to the Middle East.
It is not yet clear whether extra security measures will be put in place for Sunday's NRL grand final.
On Friday night NSW Police Commissioner Scipione said there were already strong security measures in place, but these would be assessed to see if further measures were needed.
