It’s the one ingredient every cricket side, from the Caribbean to Crookwell, strives to achieve each summer.
And the newest team to take on the challenge of the Orange District Cricket Association first grade premiership, CYMS Moroneys, will have to battle for it all season.
Captain Michael Fletcher admits he’s likely to field a vastly different outfit each and every week, with the same young guns that helped him secure the ODCA second grade title in 2014-15 likely to put serious heat on the green and golds’ top grade players for spots in the club’s first XI.
Fletcher says the competition for places is both a good and bad thing, but was confident the depth at CYMS was good enough for Moroneys to remain a steady outfit throughout 2015-16.
“Our goal is just to be competitive,” Fletcher said.
“We’ve got a lot of young guys who are very good cricketers, but the idea behind coming up to first grade is to help push them along to become better cricketers.
“Guys like Mick Hannelly and Mitch Winslade, they’re both very good and Adam Smith and Grant Koch, I’ll be handing a lot of the leadership stuff on to those guys.
“I’ll just be there to guide them.”
Hannelly hit 387 runs in second grade last year, and will be first in line for a top-grade berth in the CYMS top order this summer.
Koch hit 209 runs while in limited appearance last year Smith compiled 124 runs.
Fletcher, though, says his side’s bowling will be its strength, with Winslade and Sam Cooper, who took 25 wickets last summer, shaping as key men with the new ball.
Moroneys take on club mates CYMS in the opening game of the season next Saturday at Country Club Oval.
