One of the aims of the Friends of the Orange Regional Gallery is to provide opportunities for everyone to learn more about the arts. Our next series features three talks, by experts in their field, which will cover: collecting artworks; understanding how artworks are valued; and how to care for and conserve works on paper.
Jane Raffan, Art Valuer and Advisor will start the series on Wednesday, October 7. Jane recently documented and valued the entire Orange Regional Gallery collection, and an abridged version of these records will be available to view online in the near future.
Jane will help us understand how artworks are valued – teasing out the complexities of ascribing value and exploring market mystique and misconceptions.
Lisa-Marie Murphy, Philanthropy Project Manager at the Art Gallery of NSW will discuss approaches to collecting art, giving you ideas and strategies to help you make your purchase. Lisa-Marie formed an art collective and her talk will include discussion on how the collective operates and how it assists new collectors acquire knowledge and confidence in the art market. This talk will be on Wednesday, October 28.
Catherine Thomson is the Senior Conservator, Collections, Collection Care at the State Library of NSW. Catherine has had 20 years of conservation experience working with paper and photographs. Her talk on Wednesday, November 11 will focus on works on paper, including drawings, prints, watercolours, photographs and books. After purchasing a work on paper, their care is the most important issue to address to ensure they retain their beauty and value.
All talks will be held at the Orange Regional Gallery in Byng Street. Talks will start at 5.30pm and will go for approximately an hour, with time for questions. Refreshments will be served at the end of the talk.
