The growing number of bars, restaurants and cafes, makes Orange a great place to visit or live.
However, it only takes one visit to Orange’s FoodCare headquarters in Glenroi to realise not everyone is living the high life.
While some of us take dining out for granted, there are plenty of others who are battling to put food on their own tables, and that is where FoodCare steps in.
For many people, once the energy and telephone bills have been paid, and the car insurance and registration set aside, there’s not much left to cover the cost of living.
FoodCare offers heavily discounted food, at a fraction of the price, to people in need and luckily the fantastic people behind the service have decided to run the service twice a week.
Thanks to FoodCare, people on pensions or Centrelink payments are able to purchase essential items such as break and milk, for very little.
A social harvest program also allows keen gardeners to donate excess produce for FoodCare clients to buy.
FoodCare already services 100 people a week, but 500 people have registered with the service.
When news spreads that FoodCare has opened its doors for an extra day, the number of clients is likely to increase.
However, FoodCare is desperately short of volunteers, so anyone with free time on their hands should think about joining this fantastic initiative.
There’s nothing more rewarding than volunteering for a grassroots organisation that is really making a difference in people’s lives.
