IT'S the type of car you could imagine Al Capone leaning out of, spraying his adversaries down in a hail of bullets, however the 1910 Hupmobile taking part in this weekend’s Canobolas Country Rally hasn’t seen anything quite as exciting as that.

“It’s the oldest car in the rally,” Orange District Antique Motor Club president Keith Packham said.
“And they range from that, all the way up to cars that are at least 30 years old.”
The Orange District Antique Motor Club run the Canobolas Country Rally every three years, and the fine weather forecast this weekend should make the entire journey an enjoyable one.
Leaving from their club room at the Old Bloomfield School on Louie Lane, the club will be touring far and wide during the long weekend.
“On Saturday, we’ll be heading out to Lucknow for a tour of the Wentworth Mine and on Sunday, we’ll be driving out to Manildra, then to Gumble and on to Molong,” he said.
Twenty-five vehicles will be taking part in the rally and they will be on display from 9.30-11am in the Robin Hood Hotel car park on Sunday.
Mr Packham owns two vehicles, his latest being a Kermit green 1930 Buick coupe.
“I bought it five years ago as it is,” Mr Packham said.
Another vintage car enthusiast with a green car is Ken Gazzard who is busy preparing his A-Model Ford for the weekend.
“I’ve had this car for 20 years now,” he said.
“It was a real mess when I first bought it and I’ve been sourcing parts from the US and here in Australia to fix it up.”
A trip north of Manildra and back can test an old car, but Mr Packham did not expect problems.
“They’re all a lot more reliable than they were many years ago,” he said.
“But we do have the services of a truck with a tray on the back just in case.”

“It’s a Kermit green colour with the spare wheel mounted into the mudguard.”
