This week we’ve had a record number of entries in the Orange Wine Show as growers proudly showcase their wines.
In fact this year’s event attracted 291 entries, that’s 40 more than last year.
These entries have been drawn from a range of different grape varieties producing a range of different wines from chardonnay to shiraz.
The fact that our growers continue to participate in their local wine show and support the event is essential if Orange is to continue to grow its reputation as a premier wine growing region.
In fact if Orange Region Vignerons Association’s Justin Byrne is correct the latest crop of wines will prove even better than the last lot, particularly when it comes to aromatic white wines.
Of course it’s not only the Orange Wine Show where winemakers hope to excel.
Yesterday the winners of the prestigious NSW Wine Awards were announced and after a record-breaking 872 entries were received, 456 wines were awarded medals with 69 of them coming from Orange.
Of the 57 gold medals awarded throughout the state, eight of them went to Orange winemakers and that’s a pretty good strike rate in anyone’s books.
In fact only the Hilltops and Hunter Valley regions proved more successful.
Of course it’s no secret that the Orange region is a great location for grape growing and winemaking thanks to its unique combination of geology, soils, climate and temperature.
However it takes much more than geography and weather to make good wines.
Our winemakers are passionate about what they do and consistently work together to promote the industry they love and share their extraordinary wine with the world.
