Fine art students aren’t in the picture on fees

FINE arts students at TAFE Western Institute Orange campus are yet to learn details of a new fee structure that will mean they’re offered training on a “fee for service basis”.

A spokesperson for the department of education and communities confirmed changes would be made to the arts faculty at Orange TAFE with students paying fees in accordance with demand.

“Although popular, fine arts courses in disciplines such as sculpture, visual arts and ceramics, have limited job prospects,” the spokesperson said.

“TAFE NSW needs to focus its government funding on areas of jobs growth and high skills need to support the economy.”

The spokesperson said TAFE students will soon be given advice on the study options available in 2013, including information on the fees and loans that are available.

“TAFE Western has a reputation of providing training to meet the needs of students, employers and communities,” the spokesperson said.

“Providing training which addresses skills shortages, in particular for tradespeople, will continue to be a priority for TAFE Western.”
