Orange City Council environmental sustainability committee chair, councillor Neil Jones hoped more people would join the trial.
“There was a strong initial reaction to the proposed change and now the dust has settled, this trial will be a good opportunity to see if the change can work for Orange residents,” he said.
Residents can be a part of the three-month trial, from September to December, if they are willing to use their green and yellow bins more and only put their red bin out once a fortnight.
To encourage people during the trial period council will send participants tips on how to manage and separate their waste conveniently.
Everyone who fills in the diary each week will go in the running to win a $1500 debit card.
“This proposed change is in line with long-term waste industry trends which are about reducing, but if the community say they can’t work with the proposal, then we have to deal with that,” Cr Jones said.
“The council is taking this trial seriously.”
If evidence from the trial does not support the switch to a fortnightly red-bin service, the council will take that into account, along with other community responses.
